Do line patterns or adjacent reels count?
In a payline format, there are defined paths or patterns. In the ways format, eligible symbols can be important on consecutive reels according to the winning direction. The minimum count and any exclusions must be seen before the combinations are counted.
On two five-reel grids, identical placements may be eligible on one and not the other. The reason is the winning-pattern rules, not the name or color of the grid.

- Winning direction
- Minimum count and symbol exclusions
There are similar symbols but the match is not clear? In checklist of start, line and interval, the same fictitious grid is evaluated in both rules. You can see why reel 5 doesn’t join when there is a gap in reel 4.
Additional checklist
In Wild Wild Riches, there is a separate question about the feature itself. Read the Wild Wild Riches: which condition and which value on the reels? for documented rules and clear hypothetical examples.
For a focused example, read Expanded reels: potential ways are not winning ways.
More ways does not mean better results.
Prioritize the rules screen itself and current operator conditions. If there is an unclear unit, trigger or scope, don’t make assumptions.
